چکیده

Railroad-related accidents are more dangerous than other transportation accidents in terms of severity and death rate etc. Therefore more efforts are necessary for improving safety. In the mean time, Korean national railroad has researched and invested continuously such as intelligent safety equipments and level crossing between railroad and highway for decreasing railroad-related accident and increasing safety. The purpose of this study is about railway gate control system and its safety effects at railroad-highway grade crossing in Korea. Operation principle of railway gate control system is as follows; first, magnetic sensors recognize movement direction of automobile, willing to pass the railway crossing. Second, time difference control of barrier makes to stop gateway barrier for some time to let trapped vehicle can get away safely from railway crossing. Image recording system can record and play railway crossing situation. There were no accidents in 5 lines of total lines after installed gate delay control system in Korea. In addition, accidents in Jung-Ang and Gyeong-Eui lines decreased to its half and more where most accident happened lines in Korea. As a whole, this system brings the effect of decreasing accident about 68.6% of total rail accidents. By this study, railway gate control system has a big effect for reducing accident at railroad-highway grade crossing. And sustainable installation and operation are necessary. For the future study, some analysis such as net analysis and econometrics analysis of railway crossing accident is needed, because of lack of data. Also, it needs to study about railway crossing integrated management system.

An Evaluation of Traffic Control Devices and Driver Distraction on Driver Behavior at Railway-highway Grade Crossings

The U.S. railroad system is made up of over 700 railroads operating on 140,000 miles of track, with more than 130,000 at-grade public railway-highway crossings, or intersections in which any part of a roadway intersects with railroad tracks. Safety at these railroad-highway grade crossings and the related traffic control devices used to communicate with drivers is of major concern. There are th...

A Radio Based Intelligent Railway Grade Crossing System to Avoid Collision

Railway grade crossing is become the major headache for the transportation system. This paper describes an intelligent railway crossing control system for multiple tracks that features a controller which receives messages from incoming and outgoing trains by sensors. These messages contain detail information including the direction and identity of a train. Depending on those messages the contro...

Automatic Railway Gate Control System Using Microcontroller

In everywhere at level crossing between railroad and highway there are so many railway accidents happening due to the carelessness in manual operations or lack of workers. So, this paper describes the automatic railway gate control system using PIC microcontroller for saving precious human lives and preventing major disasters in railway track. Railway gate may be saved for the road users to pre...

A latent class modelling approach for identifying vehicle driver injury severity factors at highway-railway crossings

In this paper, we aim to identify the different factors that influence injury severity of highway vehicle occupants, in particular drivers, involved in a vehicle-train collision at highway-railway grade crossings. The commonly used approach to modeling vehicle occupant injury severity is the traditional ordered response model that assumes the effect of various exogenous factors on injury severi...

Identifying at Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Hotspots in Canada

This research presents a risk-based Hotspots identification model at highway-rail grade crossings in Canada. Two sets of models were developed to predict collision frequency and consequence at individual crossings. A two–dimensional graphic approach was adopted to combine these two models together to predict the risk at each crossing. Hotspots based on collision history tended to be widespread ...
